Understanding the Basics
Granite is extremely hard, durable and is resistant to damage and scratches. Granite comes in a wide variety of colors and sizes.
Granite is a naturally occurring stone classified as an igneous rock, formed by the cooling and solidifying of molten materials. One of the hardest, natural materials on earth. It’s durability makes it great for countertops and vanities.
Granite Finishes
When picking out the color of your stone, you will also chose its finish. There are three types of finishes that are the most common in the stone industry. Your finish will change the overall look of your stone.
- Polished: smooth, shiny, reflective, mirror like surface that draws out the color of the stone
- Honed: smooth, non-shiny or reflective, cuts down on glare, can be described as a buffed or matte finish
- Leathered: textured surface, non-reflective
Where should granite be used in my home?
Because of Granite’s durability, it can be placed anywhere in the home. One of its most common placement is the kitchen. Below are a list of areas in your home that granite could be used.
Granite Uses
- kitchens
- vanity tops
- wet bars
- fireplace surrounds & fireplace hearth
- backsplashes
- countertops
- bathrooms
- outdoor areas
- furniture pieces
What are the Benefits?
There are many benefits to choosing granite over another stone for your home. The main point is it’s durability and the hardness of the stone. You can count on your granite piece lasting longer than you stay in your home. Another benefit? It’s all natural! This natural stone evokes colors, movement and uniqueness that no other man-made product can give you. It is extracted directly from the earth, cut and polished with no added materials. No piece will ever match another exactly. It also prevents bacteria and germs from building up overtime because it is a natural stone that does not have any grooves or pits.
